Program Information

Program Description
Assessment-Based Recognition in Medical Office Basics is a 10-CEU online program that provides foundational knowledge for medical office professionals. Participants will build skills in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, compliance, legal concepts, coding, insurance, communication, and workplace wellness.

This program was created by the Career Professional Development Committee of the AAMA. 

Program Overview
Assessment-Based Recognition in Medical Office Basics is composed of eight courses (10 CEUs):

Course 1: Foundations of Medical Terminology - 1 Clinical AAMA CEU

Learning medical terminology can be like learning a new language. Understand words that look and sound alike and their parts and abbreviations. Discover the anatomic reference systems. Learn how to define words by breaking down their prefixes, roots, and suffixes.

Course 2: Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology - 3 Clinical AAMA CEUs
Understanding anatomy and physiology is fundamental to any career in the health care profession. Use appropriate anatomical terminology to identify key body structures, body regions, and directions of the body. Discuss the functions of various parts of the body and the diseases associated with them.

Course 3: Health Care Compliance for the Front Office - 1 Administrative/General AAMA CEU
Health care compliance can be challenging due to ever-changing laws, regulations, and requirements. Learn how front-office staff can uphold patient safety, patient privacy, and accurate billing. Discuss the role of front-office staff in emergencies.

Course 4: Legal Overview for the Medical Office   – 1 Administrative/General AAMA CEU
Both state and federal laws govern the scope of practice of health care professionals. Review concepts such as consent, standard of care, and malpractice. Discuss the importance of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act in upholding patient safety and the law in medical practices.

Course 5: The World of Medical Coding - 1 Administrative AAMA CEU
Medical coding is an essential aspect of working in a medical practice. Learn about what coding is and its significance in health care. Become familiar with the essential materials required to be an efficient coder. Discuss Current Procedural Terminology codes and guidelines and chapter-specific guidelines of the International Classification of Diseases.

Course 6: Registration and Insurance - 1 Administrative/General AAMA CEU
Working on the front lines of medical practices requires an abundance of expertise in communication and safety. Learn the skills and characteristics required of a medical practice receptionist. Review techniques for using the telephone, scheduling appointments, and collecting payments from patients. Discuss the necessary aspects of maintaining environmental safety and security for the practice.

Course 7: Communication at its Best - 1 Administrative/General AAMA CEU
 Effective communication is crucial to reducing medical errors and running a successful health care practice. Describe strategies for overcoming barriers to communication. Outline the role of medical practice staff in promoting effective communication.

Course 8: How to Deal When Things Are, In Fact, Not Fine - 1 General AAMA CEU
 Stress and anxiety in the workplace can occur as a result of both personal and professional stressors. Learn how to identify signs of stress and anxiety at work. Explore strategies to help avoid feeling stress at work. Discover how to manage competing demands from work and personal life, leading to better engagement in the workplace and self-care.

Additional Information
  • Each course includes video content and a posttest with a minimum passing score of 80%.
  • Users will earn CEUs as they pass the individual courses.
  • Those who pass some, but not all, of the eight courses will still earn CEUs for the courses that were passed.
Retake Information
One retake per course posttest is allowed.

Non-AAMA Member: $160
