Course Information
Course Description
Medical assistants play an important role in helping patients navigate breast cancer risk assessment, screening, and follow-up care. This course reviews breast cancer risk factors, current screening recommendations, breast density, supplemental screening options, and the differences between screening and diagnostic mammography.

Learners will explore practical ways to identify patients who may be due for screening, prepare patients for breast imaging, answer common questions, and coordinate next steps after an abnormal result. The course also examines how individual risk, breast density, patient preferences, and practical considerations can influence imaging decisions.

Learning Objectives
As a result of completing this course, learners will be able to...
  • Identify breast cancer risk factors and patients who may need risk assessment or screening.
  • Compare screening mammography with symptom-driven diagnostic mammography.
  • Explain how breast density affects cancer detection and supplemental screening decisions.
  • Describe current breast cancer screening recommendations for average-, intermediate-, and high-risk patients.
  • Apply patient education and care coordination strategies before and after breast imaging.
Intended Audience
This course is intended for medical assistants, CMA (AAMA) professionals, and other ambulatory or outpatient care staff who help patients access breast cancer screening and diagnostic services. It is especially relevant for professionals who provide patient education, identify screening needs, respond to breast health questions, and coordinate imaging follow-up.
