Course Description
Sickle cell disease is a group of inherited blood disorders associated with anemia, severe pain episodes, infections, stroke, organ damage, and other serious complications. This course examines the causes and forms of sickle cell disease, inheritance patterns, newborn screening, comprehensive treatment, and emerging therapies. Learners will also explore barriers involving access to specialty care, transitions from pediatric to adult care, pain-management stigma, and bias within the health care system.

Medical assistants will gain practical strategies for recognizing urgent concerns, maintaining accurate health records, reinforcing care plans, coordinating follow-up, advocating for timely pain treatment, and providing respectful support to patients living with a complex lifelong condition.
