Course Description
This webinar will assist learners in identifying the ethical responsibilites of medical assistants to prevent excessive alcohol use across diverse populations. The course will also address stigma and cultural factors that can influence alcohol use, treatment seeking, and patient-provider communication. Learners will examine non-judgmental and trauma-informed communication techniques to employ during alcohol use screenings and brief interventions. These practical and culturally sensitive strategies will help support early identification and intervention in clinical and rural settings.

Licensed clinical social worker and associate professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. It is provided by the Medical Assistant Partnership for Healthy Pregnancies and Families, a partner of the AAMA.
Intended Audience
This course is designed for medical assistants, CMA (AAMA) professionals, allied health professionals, and other ambulatory care team members who participate in patient screening, education, and preventive care. Learners will gain practical, culturally responsive communication skills to support alcohol use screening, brief intervention, stigma reduction, and patient-centered care across diverse populations, including patients in rural and underserved communities.
