Bundle Description
This program provides a comprehensive introduction to the legal and ethical principles that guide health care practice. Learners will explore medical law, patient rights, risk management, informed consent, professional liability, and emerging legal issues, while also examining ethical decision-making, cultural competence, professional conduct, and real-world ethical dilemmas through the lens of the AAMA Code of Ethics.

Bundle Overview
This bundle consists of two courses, Foundations of Medical Law for Medical Assistants and Foundations of Medical Ethics for Medical Assistants.

Course 1: Foundations of Medical Law for Medical Assistants (25 Admin/Gen CEUs)
This course provides an essential dive into the vast world of medical law in the United States. 

Learners will explore:
  • A brief history of medical law, the U.S. legal system, and the courts
  • Essential legal concepts for healthcare professionals such as scope of practice, standard of care, confidentiality, and more.
  • Key topics in today's healthcare environment, such as risk management and liability insurance.
  • The provider-patient relationship and their respective rights
  • Informed Consent, advanced directives, and the role of the medical assistant
  • Professional negligence and medical malpractice, including a discussion on torts and liability
  • Medical records, including structure, ownership and access, disclosures, and billing, and where they intersect with legal proceedings
  • Workplace laws and regulations
  • The emerging legal trends of telehealth, genetic privacy, cannabis, and artificial intelligence

Course 2: Foundations of Medical Ethics for Medical Assistants (15 Admin/Gen CEUs)
This course takes a detailed look at medical ethics in the United States.

Learners will explore:

  • The evolution of medical ethics, scientific medicine, and bioethics
  • Diversity, cultural competence, and communication
  • Ethical dilemmas in healthcare surrounding informed consent, confidentiality, end-of-life care, and more
  • Professional ethics for medical assistants and other health care professionals
  • Organizational ethics
  • Personal vs. professional ethics and moral conflicts
  • Ethical issues in emerging technologies
  • Composition and functions of Health Ethics Committees
  • Case studies based on the AAMA Code of Ethics
