Course Overview
Identifying and Responding to Human Trafficking: The Medical Assistant’s Role is a comprehensive course that explores the scope of human trafficking, who is most at risk, and how medical assistants can identify red flags and respond appropriately and safely.

This course equips medical assistants with hands-on strategies to support their patients, their practices, and themselves in the fight against human trafficking.
Course Information

Course Description
Medical assistants may be among the first health professionals to interact with a person experiencing human trafficking. This course prepares learners to recognize possible behavioral, physical, psychological, and situational indicators while responding with sensitivity and respect. Learners will explore trauma-informed communication, patient privacy, objective documentation, reporting requirements, safety protocols, and collaboration with the health care team and community resources.

Scenario-based activities demonstrate how to create opportunities for private conversation, avoid retraumatization, and support patients without investigating or confronting a suspected trafficker. The course also addresses professional boundaries, secondary trauma, and strategies for sustaining your own well-being while providing compassionate care. 

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Apply effective and trauma-informed communication strategies
  • Describe laws related to human trafficking, reporting, and privacy
  • Follow appropriate documentation protocols
  • Collaborate with health care teams and local agencies to support individuals affected by human trafficking
  • Implement strategies to manage secondary trauma and support personal well-being
