Bundle Description

Build essential knowledge for navigating the legal, ethical, clinical, and patient-safety responsibilities of medical assisting. This four-course bundle covers medical law, professional ethics, nutrition, and the identification of human trafficking. Learners will examine legal and ethical decision-making, support informed and respectful patient care, reinforce evidence-based nutrition guidance, and respond safely to possible trafficking indicators. Course 1: Foundations of Medical Law for Medical Assistants 
This course will explore:

  • A brief history of medical law, the U.S. legal system, and the courts
  • Essential legal concepts for healthcare professionals such as scope of practice, standard of care, confidentiality, and more.
  • Key topics in today's healthcare environment, such as risk management and liability insurance.
  • The provider-patient relationship and their respective rights
  • Informed Consent, advanced directives, and the role of the medical assistant
  • Professional negligence and medical malpractice, including a discussion on torts and liability
  • Medical records, including structure, ownership and access, disclosures, and billing, and where they intersect with legal proceedings
  • Workplace laws and regulations
  • The emerging legal trends of telehealth, genetic privacy, cannabis, and artificial intelligence

Course 2: Foundations of Medical Ethics for Medical Assistants
This course will explore:
  • Morals and ethics
  • The evolution of medical ethics, scientific medicine, and bioethics

  • Ethical dilemmas in healthcare surrounding informed consent, confidentiality, end-of-life care, and more
  • Professional ethics for medical assistants and other health care professionals

Course 3: Introduction to Nutrition

Explore nutrition basics, dietary guidelines, weight management options, and nutrition modifications for a variety of conditions. Learn more about eating disorders and effective communication strategies regarding nutrition and weight management.  

Course 4: Identifying and Responding to Human Trafficking: The Medical Assistant’s Role
Identifying and Responding to Human Trafficking: The Medical Assistant’s Role
 is a comprehensive course that explores the scope of human trafficking, who is most at risk, and how medical assistants can identify red flags and respond appropriately and safely.


Through in-depth modules, learners will gain practical knowledge and skills related to:

  • Recognizing indicators of human trafficking
  • Effective and trauma-informed communication strategies
  • Laws related to human trafficking, reporting, and privacy
  • Appropriate documentation protocols
  • Collaboration with health care teams and local agencies
  • Managing secondary trauma and supporting personal well-being


This course equips medical assistants with hands-on strategies to support their patients, their practices, and themselves in the fight against human trafficking.


Learners will have 90 days to complete the four courses and posttests.
