Course Overview
This course will help you understand important aspects of pediatric care for children of all ages (infants to adolescents). You will learn about well-child visits, immunizations, and other aspects of pediatric care.

Course Information
Course Description
Well-child visits provide the foundation for preventive pediatric health care and support healthy growth and development from infancy through adolescence. This course explores the essential components of well-child care, including health histories, physical examinations, developmental and behavioral assessments, screening recommendations, anticipatory guidance, and immunizations. Learners will review age-specific milestones, recommended screenings, and preventive care strategies guided by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Bright Futures framework.

The course also addresses important aspects of pediatric care such as vaccine communication, adolescent health discussions, sexual health screening, and recognition of potential child maltreatment. Emphasis is placed on the medical assistant’s role in supporting preventive care, patient education, developmental surveillance, and family-centered healthcare.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to:
  • Recognize the benefits of well-child visits
  • Identify the ages at which well-child visits should occur
  • Describe the examinations, assessments, and screenings of typical well-child visits • List the vaccinations given from birth to 6 years and 7 to 18 years
  • Identify ethical concerns associated with vaccines
  • Address fears and misconceptions about vaccines
  • Recognize the role of sex education and screening for sexually transmitted infections in patient health
  • Describe common types of abuse and neglect as well as associated risk factors
  • Identify the steps in taking a medical history of potentially abused or neglected children
