Course Description
Nutrition plays a vital role in health promotion, disease prevention, and chronic disease management. This course provides a comprehensive introduction to nutrition concepts relevant to medical assisting practice, including macronutrients, micronutrients, hydration, dietary supplements, healthy eating patterns, weight management, and nutrition modifications for common health conditions.

Learners will explore current dietary guidance, including the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPlate recommendations, while developing practical communication strategies for discussing nutrition and weight with patients in a respectful, patient-centered manner. The course also examines nutrition considerations for chronic diseases, food allergies, eating disorders, and special populations, helping medical assistants support healthy lifestyle behaviors and reinforce provider recommendations.

Learning Objectives
As a result of completing this course, learners will be able to:
  • Describe the roles of macronutrients, micronutrients, water, and dietary supplements in maintaining health.
  • Explain current dietary recommendations, including the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPlate principles.
  • Identify evidence-based approaches to weight management, including lifestyle modification and treatment options.
  • Apply respectful, patient-centered communication techniques when discussing nutrition and weight-related concerns.
  • Recognize nutrition modifications commonly used to support patients with chronic diseases, food-related conditions, and eating disorders.
