More than 1 million people in the U.S. have HIV, a virus that weakens the immune system, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Learn about HIV, including epidemiology, transmission, how the virus replicates in the body, and provider-patient communication for people living with HIV. Review relevant community resources and HIV screening guidelines by the CDC and other national organizations.

Course Information
Course Description
HIV remains a significant public health issue that affects individuals and communities across the United States. In this course, learners will explore current trends in HIV/AIDS epidemiology, including disparities related to race, ethnicity, age, and geography. The course reviews the importance of routine HIV screening, available testing methods, and evidence-based prevention strategies such as post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). In addition, learners will examine different models of patient-provider relationships and the role of communication, shared decision-making, and patient autonomy in delivering effective care. Practical guidance is provided to help healthcare professionals support prevention efforts, encourage screening, and foster patient-centered discussions about HIV risk and care.

Learning Objectives
As a result of completing this course, learners will be able to:
  • Describe key trends in HIV/AIDS epidemiology and populations disproportionately affected by HIV.
  • Identify available HIV testing methods and the importance of routine screening.
