Video Summary
If a screening mammogram is abnormal, the patient may get a BI-RADS 0 result, meaning the study is incomplete and more images are needed. This callback happens in about 6% to 12% of screening mammograms, often around 10%. The imaging center usually contacts the patient directly for additional mammogram views, and sometimes an ultrasound. Most callbacks are not cancer: many return to routine screening, or get a BI-RADS 3 with short-term follow-up in six months. A smaller group needs biopsy, and only about 5% of all recalled patients are ultimately diagnosed with breast cancer.
